The Comet Is Coming (gb)

Friday 5 April 22:00 - 23:30 AB BOX

Saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings goes Sun Ra on Impulse! Records

We got a hold of one of the trend-setters in the current wave of innovative jazz, Shabaka Hutchings. This saxophonist from London, with Antillian roots, scored exceptionally high in many year-end charts last year with ‘Your Queen Is A Reptile’ (Sons Of Kemet), including ‘Album Of The Year’ in The Wire. As architect and producer of the genre-defying compilation ‘We out Here’ (see too: Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia …), he delivered an absolute document of the times. Live too, he blew away crowds at every festival and from every stage.

He has already attended BRDCST in the past, then under the name Shabaka and the Ancestors but this time as The Comet Is Coming. King Shabaka – as he describes himself within this ensemble – presents himself as the true successor of cosmic jazz-pioneer Sun Ra.

Particularly impressive: ‘Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery’ has been released on the legendary Impulse! Records that made John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Max Roach great. The band’s website meanwhile declares: ‘The Comet is Coming to destroy illusions. It is the overcoming of fear, the embracing of chaos, the peripheral sight that we might summon the fire.’

And, of course, we secretly hope that Shabaka goes and joins Khalab (with whom he is to be heard on the album ‘Black Noise 2084’) on stage.
