‘Adigéry’s Soulwax-produced EP is a celebratory and thumping delight’. (NME)
On her first EP ‘Zandoli’ – soon to be released on Soulwax’ well-reputed DEEWEE Records – Belgian-Caribbean Charlotte Adigéry (also known as WWWater) shows us that she is the ideal storyteller. She refuses to take herself seriously and, together with producer Bolis Pupul, makes danceable synth-pop in which humour and spontaneity are the most important ingredients. ‘If you take yourself too seriously you won’t ever embrace the fact you could fail,’ she declared in Mixmag. ‘And that vulnerability is something that’s super-inspiring. If you dive too deep into the ego, the music will suffer.’ And yet: in ‘Paténipat’ she respectfully honours her musical roots: the gwo-ka music of Martinique. In the meantime, Charlotte was noticed by the iconic Neneh Cherry – with whom she is currently touring Australia. Adigéry seems about due for an international breakthrough.
